Packing Tips
- Make a list of what you plan on storing. Measure your largest items
- If you need access, leave room to move around.
- Place frequently accessed items near the door
- Heavy items should be near the floor, lighter and odd shaped items near the top
- Use pallets or a grid of 2x3's to provide air circulation under your goods
- Items should be dry and clean when packed to prevent mildew or moths.
- Do not overpack heavy items. Heavy boxes can cause injuries.
- Label all of your boxes and fill boxes completely
- Store books and documents flat to protect their spines
- Dishes and Glassware items should be individually wrapped; use blank newsprint wrapping paper for best results; “nest” cups and bowls, stand plates and platters; fill air pockets with newsprint wrapping paper or foam peanuts; don’t put breakables under other boxes.
- Mirror, Windows, Screens: Wrap all glass well; store on edge, not flat.
- Pack delicate lamp shades separately; use blank newsprint wrapping paper to wrap lamp shades/ other property that may be damaged by ink-stains from regular newsprint.
- Stand sofas and mattresses on end; disassemble beds/ tables; wrap legs in newsprint wrapping paper; Keep upholstery off floor; place light plastic dust cover over furniture.
- Clean appliances thoroughly; refrigerators and freezers must be defrosted and dry and washing machines completely drained; remove doors of appliances and store separately; use drying agents where applicable
